Our Story: From Vision to Impact

Global Vision Achievers Organisation (GVA) began with a simple but powerful vision: young people coming together to create positive change in their communities. On April 6th, 2012, a group of passionate youth formed what was then called Kibera Vision Achievers Group, officially registering on December 19th, 2013. Our journey began in the world of arts and creativity. We started as a film and theatre group, using the power of storytelling and performance to address critical social issues in our communities. Through theatrical presentations, we worked to enhance peace and unity in Kibera and surrounding slum communities, using creativity as a tool for social cohesion and positive messaging.

Over the years, we’ve learned that effective community development requires humility, flexibility, and genuine partnership with the people we serve. We’ve evolved from a top-down service delivery model to a collaborative approach that prioritizes community voice and leadership in all our programs. We’ve also learned the importance of addressing both immediate needs and long-term systemic change.

While we provide emergency support during crises, our focus remains on building individual and community capacity for long-term resilience and self-reliance.

Our Mission

At Global Vision Achiever Kenya, our mission is to break the cycle of poverty by empowering children, youth, and families in underserved communities through education, artistic expression, basic needs support, and youth-led leadership. We work hand in hand with communities to build sustainable, culturally relevant solutions that uplift individuals, strengthen families, and create long-term impact across generations.

We envision a Kenya where every child, regardless of background, has the opportunity to dream, learn, and thrive; where communities are equipped to solve their own challenges; and where dignity, creativity, and resilience drive a more just and equitable society. Our vision is of a future shaped by empowered youth, inclusive systems, and locally led change.

Volunteering with GVAKenya means becoming part of a movement that transforms lives from the ground up. Whether you're a local changemaker or an international ally, your time, skills, and passion can directly impact children, youth, and families in need. We offer flexible, meaningful opportunities to teach, mentor, support health initiatives, or contribute to creative programs — all while building deep connections and gaining real-world experience in grassroots development.

Foresight

For three years, we focused on using arts and performance to build bridges within our community. But as we worked more closely with families and children, we began to see the deeper needs that existed beyond what our artistic programs alone could address. Children were missing school because their families couldn't afford fees or uniforms. Young mothers were dropping out of education permanently after having children. Families were struggling to meet basic nutritional needs. In 2015, our members made a pivotal decision: we would expand our mission to directly address the root causes of poverty and inequality that we witnessed daily in our communities. This marked the beginning of our transformation from an arts group to a comprehensive community development organization.

From our origins in Kibera, we expanded our work to serve underprivileged communities throughout Nairobi, with particular focus on children, teen mothers, and orphans in Kibera, Mathare, Huruma, and other informal settlements. We recognized that while each community has its unique characteristics and challenges, many of the underlying issues – poverty, limited access to quality education, lack of economic opportunities, and social marginalization – were consistent across different areas. As our programs proved successful and our reputation grew, we began receiving requests for support from communities beyond Nairobi. In 2020, we officially rebranded from Kibera Vision Achievers Group to Global Vision Achievers Organisation, reflecting our expanded scope and national reach. Today, we operate programs across Kenya with established branches in Kisumu and Mombasa, and we continue expanding into underserved regions throughout the country

Why this work matters

The communities we serve face complex, interconnected challenges that require comprehensive responses.

Poverty is not just about lack of money – it’s about limited opportunities, social exclusion, inadequate access to quality services, and systems that too often fail the people who need them most.

Children in these communities often face impossible choices: help support their families economically or attend school; care for younger siblings or participate in extracurricular activities; accept whatever opportunities are available locally or pursue dreams that seem out of reach. Our programs are designed to expand options and create new pathways forward. We also recognize that sustainable change requires more than just individual interventions.

We work to strengthen community systems, build local leadership capacity, advocate for policy changes, and create networks of support that can sustain progress over time.

Looking Forward: Our Vision for the Future

Why We Believe in This Mission

Every child in our programs offers something special to the world.

We’ve seen shy children become confident performers, struggling students excel when given the right support, young mothers develop into community leaders, and communities transform when they have the resources and support they need to address their own challenges.

Through partnerships with donors, volunteers, supporters, and community leaders, we work tirelessly to help every child and young person reach their full potential.

We believe that investing in young people and their communities is not just the right thing to do – it’s essential for building a more just, equitable, and prosperous society for everyone.
